I’m a nursing student in Minnesota right now doing my public health clinical in the Minneapolis Public School System. The impact of ICE in this school system is egregious. The fear of students and families has resulted in over 1/3 of the students staying at home instead of getting their deserved education. Chemical irritants were sprayed at a nearby park of the school, making it unsafe to allow the children to play there during recess. Many of the students families are unable to leave their homes, making groceries, rent, and school nearly impossible. The kids at school are worried about their friends and hoping they can come back to school.

However, my experience with the community coming together during such times has been incredible. Upon walking through the school, rooms are filled with donations of toiletries and groceries for families in need. Parents and volunteers are loading up their cars, driving them to fellow families in the neighborhood. Even the school spent their resources and time raising money to cover rent for families in need. It’s amazing and I cannot imagine a better place to live. I am proud to be in Minnesota right now. If you can help at all with groceries, canned goods, toiletries, feminine hygiene products, money, or spreading the word will help the continuous support for this special community.
